Kiwanis Facts and Milestones
January 21, 1915 is the birthdate of Kiwanis. On this date, the Detroit #1 Club received its Charter and an amazing service club was begun.
Kiwanis International headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana
1916 The first Kiwanis club formed outside the United States was in Hamilton,
Ontario Canada.
In 1924 Kiwanians adopted the six objects of Kiwanis at the International Convention in
Denver.- In 1962 the first Latin America Club was formed in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
- In 1963 the first European Club was formed in Vienna, Austria.
- In 1964 the first Asia-Pacific club was established in Manila, Philippines.
- In 1976 the first African club was established in Kana, Nigeria
- In 1987 Delegates to the Denver International Convention voted to admit women in
membership. Today nearly 50,000 of the 300,000 plus members are women. - In 1992 Kiwanians adopted the first world wide service project—to eliminate iodine
deficiency disorders, the leading, preventable cause of mental retardation. - In 2005 at the International Convention in Honolulu, “Serving the Children of the
world”, was adopted as the official motto of Kiwanis. - Today there are approximately 8,700 Kiwanis clubs in 80 different countries in the world
with a total of over 301,000 members. - Kiwanis International is divided up into 47 Districts. The states of Texas and Oklahoma
make up one district, which is further divided into 38 Divisions. Comanche (Chartered 1988) is a part of Division 12, which also includes clubs
from: Brady (1970), Brownwood (1923), Coleman (1926), Cross Plains (1981), Pecan
Valley-Early (1977), San Angelo (1921) and West Angelo (1953).
